I Journeyman
<THE JOURNEYMAN DESIGN>

Image of vitruviansmall.jpgOne day in April of the year 2000, as I was watching The Matrix on HBO, something struck me. It was as if the hand of God were slapping me awake. I suddenly understood why I was put on this planet, the purpose for which I was created. It was to create the first true artificial intelligence (AI).

I became very excited. I ran out to the Borders bookstore here in San Francisco and I bought myself a copy of a book on the historical and current topics of AI, and I began to read it voraciously. I wanted a good foundation before I started to create anything, so that I would not reinvent any wheels.

In weeks that followed, I wrote a small paper on what I believed people were missing when they thought about AI, some general thoughts about the subject. It is below on the left. I also wrote a couple of other papers, things which came to me. I stayed up a few nights when the notions struck, and I tried to put them down as the notions seemed to me. I see now that the papers are somewhat fluffy, and they are not hard science. But I hope I made up for the lack of technical grounding with my enthusiasm.

In June of 2000 (it was a very good year), I was struck again with something different, and I have let this quest for the first true AI lapse. It is not that I am giving it up, but that there exist now a somewhat more short term goal. The first breathing cyberintelligence is still my lifetime goal, but I have since developed a five-year plan, which goes into a weak AI (something which only acts intelligent, contrasted to strong AI, which would be something that is intelligent) which I will build in the next several months: first, a prototype to convince myself that it is possible, then I quit my regular job and build something which will be the basis for creating my own company.

Anyway, I don't know when I will update this page next, and what this strong AI will be named may change from the Journeyman Design, and other things may pop up, but I let this page stay up. Perhaps I may puzzle or amuse you.

Original Papers:

THOUGHTS - Some general thoughts I had on artificial intelligence, including my definition of intelligence and what I see AI needs to be.

MONAD AND FREE WILL - The term "Monad" I get from Leibniz, what is to be the center of any artificial intelligence. Also, how free will might be implemented in an AI.

CREATIVITY - How may creativity be implemented without just being a complex random number generator?
